Vessel Traffic System
Every year some 30,000 sea-going ships and 110,000 barges call at the port of Rotterdam. With its ultra-modern Vessel Traffic System (VTS), it can track ships on the radar screen up to 60 kilometres off the coast and 40 kilometres inland. The VTS has 3 manned traffic centres, 2 traffic stations and 29 unmanned radar stations at strategic locations in the port.

Botlek Traffic Centre
The traffic centre in the Botlek area (see map) is the busiest traffic centre in the port. This manned traffic centre is situated on the crossroads of two main waterways, the "Nieuwe Maas" and "Oude Maas". Assisted by skilled traffic operators ships safely pass these waterways. Ships include barges, tugboats and sea-going vessels like containerships and coasters.
